Trek Among the Three Giants

Trekking Among the Three Giants. This itinerary will take us near the highest and most famous mountains in the western Alps: Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, and the Mont Blanc.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 — St. Vincent

    Meet at local hotel. Dinner and breakfast.

  2. Day 2 — Rifugio Grand Tournalin

    Bus ride to starting point. Trek to the rifugio. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch bag.

  3. Day 3 — Cervinia

    Cross Col di Nannaz, trek along the border with Switzerland with beautiful views of the Mont Rosa massif and the Matterhorn. Very comfortable hotel with dinner, breakfast, and lunch bag.

  4. Day 4 — Rifugio

    With the Matterhorn behind us we trek up the Barmasse valley and cross over the Finestra di Ersaz and the Finestra de Cignana to descend to the rifugio in a beautiful green valley.

  5. Day 5 — Aosta

    Hike down to Porliod for lunch and taxi to Aosta. Late afternoon free to explore the town and its history. Boutique hotel in the heart of the old town. Breakfast and lunch bag. Dinner on your own.

  6. Day 6 — Rifugio Frassati

    Trek the Grand St. Bernard valley bordering Switzerland to Frassati. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch bag.

  7. Day 7 — Courmayeur

    Hike through the very narrow Col Malatra to the majestic view of the Mont Blanc. Very comfortable hotel with breakfast. Dinner on your own.

  8. Day 8 — Departure

Trekking the Kings Trail

On this itinerary you will hike on the King's path, an ancient royal mule track built in the 1800s by the King of Italy in what used to be the Royal Hunting Reserve — now the oldest national park in Italy, Parco Nazionale Gran Paradiso. Some of the most famous mountains in the world will come into view as you travel from one valley to the next, crossing dramatic mountain passes and quaint villages built in the shadow of amazing glaciers. You will hike along Italy's French and Swiss border, in the heart of the Alps.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 — Verrès

    Meet at local B&B. Dinner, breakfast, and bag lunch.

  2. Day 2 — Rifugio Miserin

    Bus ride to the charming mountain village of Champorcher. Follow the scenic path to the beautiful Lago Miserin. The mountain inn has comfortable dormitory-style accommodations, excellent food, and a warm atmosphere. Dinner, breakfast, and lunch bag. (6 miles — elevation gain ~1,300 ft)

  3. Day 3 — Cogne

    Today's trekking takes us up to 9,300 feet between two splendid valleys. The descent meanders through amazing alpine flora and fauna with opportunities to see ibex, chamois, marmots, and golden eagles. Relax in a comfortable hotel in the tranquil town of Cogne. (9 miles — elevation gain ~1,000 ft, descent ~4,200 ft)

  4. Day 4 — Aosta

    Visit the historical regional capital of Aosta. Explore amazing Roman ruins and enjoy traditional shops and restaurants. Spend the night in a magnificently renovated 16th-century boutique hotel in the heart of the old town. Breakfast and lunch bag. Dinner on your own.

  5. Day 5 — Gran Paradiso National Park

    A shuttle takes us to Val di Rhême, a valley still wild and unspoiled. Hike through larch woods and rocky crags with panoramic views of the Granta Parei. Dinner and breakfast in a cozy mountain inn. (3.6 miles — elevation gain ~1,600 ft)

  6. Day 6 — Valle di Rhême to Valgrisenche

    A spectacular trek across the Col Bassac Deré through alpine terrain full of mountain flowers, surrounded by glaciers and snow-covered peaks. Descend to a beautiful mountain inn in one of the most pristine valleys in the Aosta region. (10 miles — elevation gain ~3,700 ft)

  7. Day 7 — Valgrisenche to Courmayeur

    Ibex, streams, and a picturesque lake mark the final trek of the week. Transport to a comfortable hotel for the final night in Courmayeur. (6.5 miles — descent ~2,000 ft)

  8. Day 8 — Departure
